It’s now been over two months since “sheltering in place” has been part of our vocabulary, and while many workers are getting back into the swing of things, many are not. Employees of such companies as Twitter, Google and Zillow have been instructed to work from home until 2021, and many other organizations are following suit. This means that many temporary solutions to making life work from home will need to be altered to account for the added time spent away from the office. Many establishments also need to wait until they receive more clearance to open their doors, which means that ‘normal’ life is continuing to stay altered as well. When it comes to the new normal, making your home work while sheltering in place is a must.

Although we’re all hopeful that this too shall pass, it’s unclear when life will ever get back to the way it was. Here are our tips to outfit your home properly, so that it works for you during this new time of normalcy.

Make Your Home Comfortable

Your home should be comfortable, no matter if there is a global pandemic happening or not. After all, this is your sanctuary, your place to relax, unwind and let go of all the stresses from the day. Make this space as comfortable as possible for you both now and in the future. Increase comfortability with elements, such as:

  • A relaxation station in the master bathroom

  • Plush couches and chairs in the living areas

  • A reading nook

  • A tranquil outdoor living space

These upgrades can be enjoyed no matter what, so even after life gets back to normal, you’ll be thankful that you made these changes to your home.

Establish a Workspace

If you read last month’s blog, we shared some helpful tips for creating the ideal workspace in your home. From carving out a space in your home to decorating it perfectly, this can help you be both productive and happy while you work from home. Add personal touches, coupled with functional tools to create a space that works for you.

Get Organized

Take this time to declutter and organize your space, so that when your schedule gets back to normal, life doesn’t have to go back to being hectic. There are some tried and true spaces in the home that become problem areas. Areas that tend to get cluttered quickly include:

  • The kitchen

  • Closets

  • Drawers

  • Garage areas

  • Sheds

Take some time to go through these areas, keeping what you need and donating or tossing what needs to go. This way, you’ll be able to find the things you need without the stress and hassle of searching for them when you’re short on time and running late for work.

Make your home work for you now, so that when life gets back to normal, you have a functional space that not only helps you relax, but keeps you positive and uplifted as well. If your career has you working from home until next year, if you’re already back to work or if you’re an essential worker who has remained on a slightly normal schedule throughout the pandemic, making these adjustments to your home can help you stay motivated, productive and most of all, happy to call your house a home.
